In my classes and internship at UALR’s Institute of Government, I have learned about editing, collaborating, writing for business and government, and the theories behind what we do as technical writers. In particular, I learned in Technical Style and Editing, Advanced Editing, and Advanced Business Communication a great deal about collaborating—that everyone has his or her own communication preference and style, that there is no single best communication style, and that before we can leverage the best of others, we must first learn what is the worst of us. Instruction in these same classes in addition to my class in Rhetorical Theory also inspired me to want to know more about how to bring about positive change so that I would be prepared, and also be able to prepare others for the future.
This academic portfolio demonstrates the Editing, Collaborating, and Writing for Business and Government skills attained in the Professional andTechnical Writing graduate program at UALR. I’ve been the lead copyeditor for an online, open-access academic journal that serves the public and quasi-public sectors, worked in partnership with others and learned how to leverage their talents as well as my own, and developed a vast array of critical thinking and writing skills that help make me an outstanding technical writer.
In this section you will find copies of the first two editions of Volume 1 of an online academic journal and a cover memo describing the copyediting work I performed in contributing to publishing the journal.
